Habit Orthodontic Appliances

Note: All habit appliances require an opposing model.

Upper Hay Rake

HA02

Discouraging thumb sucking is the purpose of this appliance. Persistent habits may require the use of this design.

Tongue-Crib

HA03

The Tongue Crib Appliance features a vertical crib inhibiting the tongue to the anterior dentition and tissue.

Lower Tongue Thrust

HA04

The lower tongue thrust appliance features a lingual wire with crib wires bent 2mm above the incisal edges of the anterior teeth.

Thumb-Tongue Habit Appliance

HA01

This is closely adapted to the rugae area of the palate. It serves as a reminder to discourage thumb or finger sucking. There are more aggressive designs for more persistent habits. Patients turn the bead which replaces the desire to suck the thumb.

Bluegrass Appliance

HA05/HA06

The Bluegrass appliance is an alternative to the Rake or Crib design. Patients turn the beads which replaces the desire to suck the thumb. Appliance may be made with beads or a silicon roller.

Dillingham Combination Expansion/Habit Appliance

EA18

This is ideal for patients exhibiting an anterior open bite, thumb finger/tongue thrust habit and needing controlled moderate to significant palatal expansion.

Dillingham Habit Appliance

HA08

The Dillingham habit appliance is an alternative to the Rake or Crib design. Wires are touching premolars and cuspids. Tongue and thumb pressure exert some flexing of the crib which allows a small amount of buccal movement

Habit Quad-Helix Combination Appliance

HA10/HA07

The Habit Quad Helix Combination is ideal for patients exhibiting an anterior open bite, thumb/finger/tongue thrust habit and needing palatal expansion.

Rib Cage Appliance

HA09

The rib cage appliance acts as a palatal crib to assist in breaking a thumb habit. The ribs serve as a “gently” aggressive reminder. The appliance can be made more aggressive by removing the balls from the tips of the ribs.
